Traditional Shotokan Karate around Cambridge

The Cambridge English Shotokan Karate Association (ESKA) Club came into being in 1994 under the auspices of Sensei Steve Austin. In 2019 we celebrated our 25th anniversary. Originally located in Comberton, it re-located to Cottenham some years later. We now have three dojos, at The Leys School in Cambridge, Cottenham, and Bar Hill, expertly and professionally staffed by Jeff Rand Sensei Godan (5th Dan), Masaya Yumeda Sensei Sandan (3rd Dan), Jo Potts Sensei Sandan (3rd Dan), and Russell McAlinden Sensei Sandan (3rd Dan). We are also capably assisted by Chris Pratten, Matthew Last (senior Black Belts), together with Sempais Ray Maillou, Stuart Shepherd, and Catherine Groves, supported by our junior Black Belts.

The association of which we are a part (ESKA) was founded in 1979 and is one of the most successful and respected associations in the United Kingdom. The founder and Chief instructor is Sensei Mike Nursey (9th Dan). The association is lively and vibrant. The moto is ‘work hard – play hard’ and this is clearly seen in the years full calendar of events which includes training courses, competitions and social activities.
